The Nature and Role of the Different Planets
Sun:
In Vedic astrology, the Sun is the principal of light,
life and love, or true-will and perception. It is the most important factor
for determining the spiritual life and potential of an individual. In represents
the soul---the causal body or reincarnating entity---whose will is behind our
fate. It is also the mind or the mental principal on a lower level as reason,
discernment, clarity and illumination.
A well-placed Sun gives intelligence, perception, strength
of will and character. It affords endurance, stamina, vitality, positive spirit,
direction, courage, conviction, confidence, leadership, independence and straightforwardness.
Without it, whatever we may do or accomplish in life will not be ours and will
not give us inner strength or peace. An ill placed Sun gives lack of intelligence,
poor perception, weakness of will and character. It creates lack of endurance,
low vitality, melancholy, fear, dependency or servitude and deviousness or dishonesty.
An overly strong but malefic Sun creates pride, arrogance,
tyranny and control. It creates much of the same problems as Mars (or Saturn)
when too strong. It can give a deceptive charisma and a dominating personality.
When the Sun is strong, we outshine everyone else for good or bad, depending
on whether its disposition is benefic or malefic, conscious or unconscious.
A weak but spiritually disposed Sun makes us receptive,
wanting to do good, and self-effacing. Yet we may lack in confidence and come
under the rule of other people. We will seek to sacrifice ourselves but may
not know what cause to give ourselves over to.
Moon:
The Moon represents our subconscious. Thus Moon can show
positive resources from the past, which gives us greater consciousness in life,
or it can show negative influences from the past that binds us to regressive
patterns of behaviour.
The Moon is a Sattvic or spiritual planet.
It gives faith, love, openness, surrender, devotion, peace and happiness. As
a very sensitive and mutable planet, the Moon can be easily influenced and overcome
by other planetary energies. Saturn can darken it, depress it or give it detachment.
The Moon represents not only responsiveness but also inertia. Through our lunar
sensitivity, we can become accustomed to a life of pain, sorrow, or ignorance,
as well as to a life of joy and truth.
The Moon is our capacity to endure in any environment,
which can also became a negative factor whereby we may accept subordination,
subservience or degradation.
At the mundane level Moon represents mother, home or
where we feel at home. It shows happiness and the state of emotions. It shows
where we place our love, care, general affection and friendship in life. On
the other hand, an afflicted Moon will show personality disorders, difficulties
in relating to other people and emotional disturbances.
The Moon shows our capacity to receive and to be affected,
but it also indicates our capacity to be hurt. It is the most easily hurt of
the planets and indicates our general vulnerability. Moon reflects our dependency.
Lunar people are friendly, caring, and nurturing but not always honest, consistent
or clear. Lunar types may become circumscribed within a family, class, group
or belief system and be unable to work with anyone outside of it.
Mars:
Mars is the planet of power, strength, courage and aggression.
It measures our ability to project force in life. On the positive side, a strong
Mars is necessary to give us the energy, will, confidence and independence--the
qualities it shares with Sun--to carry out our endeavours. Without it we have
no real interests, passions and motivations, no determination, no real intensity
or ability to carry out anything to the end and really accomplish it.
On the negative side, this same aggression brings about
competition, argument and conflict and when unchecked by other factors, it causes
domination, control, violence and injury. He is the general significator for
injury, accident, conflict and marital disharmony. Mars is very selfish and
does not take into account the views and needs of others. In a more positive
light, these difficulties come about because Mars insists upon greater independence,
differentiation and clarity of views. He makes us more certain of who we are
and who our friends are. He causes discontent and seeking until we discover
the real source of power within us.
Mercury:
Mercury is the great messenger of the Gods. He is the
planet, which represents speech, communication and commerce on all levels. In
his lower function he organises and articulates material resources. On a higher
level he connects us with our inner capacities--the powers of the mind.
Mercury governs writing, education, calculation and thought.
Mercury is the fastest moving of the planets and so is indicative of quick comprehension,
facility, ease and plasticity in expression. Mercury provides for the quick
correlation of ideas, the fast interchange of information or of things of value.
He is mental and nervous energy in its articulate activity. He shows our intellectual
powers and the degree of mental development in life.
As a planet of commerce, Mercury represents trade, or
articles of trade, including money. Though not in himself a planet of wealth,
he is helpful in both acquiring it and keeping it, as he helps us organise it.
He is necessary whenever there is to be an exchange of ideas or commodities.
He sees the value of open markets and free communication and is not restricted
by boundaries of race, nation, caste or belief, but he can be attached to his
own opinion, his calculations, and his own gains and losses.
Mercury is an important factor in determining our Vocation,
for that is what we do in life to communicate with others - our interchange
with society. Mercury shows how we appear and how we function in the network
of transactions that makes up the world of things and ideas. In this regard,
his representation of our education or training in life comes into play. He
is the child that is the father of the man.
A weak Mercury makes us rationalise things to suit our
purpose. It creates immaturity, naiveté and folly. It can create dishonesty
and a lack of properly defined boundaries. This may make a person a thief -
not because he is cruel, but because he does not respect anything as belonging
to another. Such people take what they need according to a childish view of
life that the world should provide for them. They have no objective perception
and are caught in childish fantasies and may even believe that what they have
taken was really given to them or merited by them.
Jupiter:
In the higher sense Jupiter is the divine grace, which can fulfil all of our
needs without our seeking. He gives religious merit and spiritual beneficence.
When Jupiter is with us, all life, the entire universe is with us, for he is
that cosmic and Divine beneficence. On a physical level, he is the planet of
health, the planet of wealth. He makes us active in a healthy way and attunes
us with the joy of nature. He gives vigour, vitality and a strong immune system.
The other most important aspect of Jupiter is that he gives us true knowledge
and wisdom as opposed to information based intelligence, which is the function
of Mercury. When Jupiter becomes functionally malefic and afflicted, it closes
our door to true wisdom. It will make us too materialistic, too enamoured of
wealth. It will make us proud, give us too much ego and make us a showman, and
self indulgent. He will make our inner immune system ineffective. His true creative
power will get ineffective in trivial enjoyments. His great benevolence in sharing
will transform into a mindless orgy of pleasure.
Venus:
Venus represents the feminine sprit, she is well known
as the Goddess of Love and Beauty. Our Venus shows our affection and sense of
harmony in life. On the lower and outward level Venus shows our seeking for
pleasure, comfort and luxury. She represents the pleasure of the senses and
the comforts of the body. She is sexuality and sexual attraction and serves
to make the person attractive to the opposite sex. She brings wealth as an adornment.
She is beauty, style and elegance-the refinement of wealth and not just crude
accumulation. Her concern is not just with quantity, but with quality and good
taste.
But Venus must do all these to reach out to others. Venus
wants the world must admire her. She demands that we please her and that we
be pleasing to her.
Hence when Venus gets afflicted, she can become the pleasure
that dissipates, exhausts and debilitates, the self-indulgence that can destroy
us. She will make us vain, superficial and affected - mere show.
Saturn:
Saturn is the most mysterious of all planets. On one
hand while it represents all that is evil, base and cruel, on the other it is
also a great benefic. At the mundane level it is total 'Tamasik' (Base
and Gross), and at the higher level it is the greatest 'Satwik' (Pure
and highest Soul). Saturn is the divine magistrate and the great preserver of
law and order, who will punish us the moment we deviate from our ordained life
script. And how cruel can be the punishment! Saturn can represent death and
the destroyer of all the things that we hold dear to us. Saturn will take away
the dearest one from our life without notice, can turn the king into a pauper
within a moment. Saturn wants us to understand that all these material trappings
of earthly power are meaningless, the only true thing in life is to be free
and liberated from all desires and become a true Yogi.
Saturn can be a very cruel teacher. It will give us all
the trappings just to test us and then snatch it away within a moment, in case
we deviate from the path of liberation, and have got trapped in all our material
success.
Rahu & Ketu:
Rahu and Ketu are
strange and unique concepts in Vedic Astrology. They are not planets
in the classical definition of planets. They have no mass. Rahu and Ketu are
the two lunar nodes. Rahu is known as the Dragon's Head and Ketu
as the Dragon's tail. They are just two astronomical points. Rahu is
the point at which Moon crosses the ecliptic to the north. Ketu, the south or
descending node, is where it crosses it to the south. Eclipses of Sun and Moon
can occur in proximity to either of the nodes. The nodes were regarded mythically
as the demon, which swallows the luminary and causes the eclipse.
As such, they have the power to overcome the Sun and Moon, and in the sense
they can be stronger than any of the planets. The subtle relationship between
the Sun, the Moon and the Earth plays a large part in the unfolding of each
individual's consciousness. The conjunction of any planet with either of the
lunar nodes is regarded as the kind of eclipse of that planet wherein its energy
is in some way obstructed, negated or liberated. Thus Vedic Astrology regards
these two nodes as among the most important factors in chart interpretation.
They possess the power not only to negate planetary influences, but because
eclipses are points of energy transformation, they have additional special properties
to transfer or to augment planetary influences for good or bad. It was necessary
to introduce the concept of Rahu and Ketu in detail, as they are usually alien
to a western person.
Rahu:
Rahu the north node is equated with Saturn the great
malefic by Vedic Astrologers, while Western Astrologers equate it with
Jupiter the great natural benefic. But Vedic Astrology does recognise that lunar
nodes can function in a positive, Jupiterian manner when associated with a strong
planet or when in a strong position.
A strong Rahu gives the individual worldly powers and
success. But Rahu always gives the individual a filling of dissatisfaction,
as his worldly desires can never be fulfilled, however successful the individual
may be. In its positive aspects it shows the opening up of a new and positive
Karmic sphere. Well placed, it makes the individual strong but not necessarily
sensitive to others. It will provide all the outer success but it can get us
trapped in the realm of the senses and in the abnormal or unnatural use of the
body. In the spiritual realm, Rahu can give psychic powers, but also there may
be danger from drugs, and danger from black magic. On the positive side, the
influence of Rahu can put us in harmony with collective trends and give popularity,
prestige, fame and power. It imparts an almost psychic sensitivity to mass trends,
mass media and a capacity to use them.
But Rahu is the greatest consumer, it will drive us into
frenzy to consume and consume and consume - the mythological representation
for Rahu is that after consuming everything, it starts consuming its own blood.
In its extreme affliction Rahu becomes the main planetary factor behind insanity,
neurosis, neurological disorders, possession by negative entities, and other
such abnormal sensitivities of the mind and nervous system particularly when
it influences the Moon in the chart especially by conjunction.
Ketu:
The South node or Ketu is regarded as a point
of difficult Karma from a past life in which the individual furthered his own
selfish interest at the expense of others. The South node, on the positive side,
can develop strong concentration and mastery of obscure or arcane subjects.
Ketu, though regarded as less malefic than Saturn, is
something like Mars in its malefic aspects. Ketu creates doubt, disturbance,
anger, ambition, willfulness and a critical and often narrow vision in life,
which may lead to conflict and argument.
On the positive side, Ketu means a flag. It has the power
to boost up the effects of strong planets with which it is conjoined. Ketu gives
sudden and unexpected results for good or bad. On the spiritual front Ketu gives
perception, liberation, wisdom and psychic sensitivity in a more genuine way
but can give us a too limiting, critical view of things.

Dasa Vichar : Analysis of Vimsottari periods
In this section, we analyse the different planetary periods
and what effect they will have on your life. According to Vedic astrology, theoretical
life of an individual is taken to be 120 years and this entire life span is
divided into different main periods of planets and within this main period,
there are sub-periods of all the planets and then each sub-period can be further
divided into sub-sub-periods of planets.
This follows a predetermined sequence, but the starting
point of which period at the time of birth is determined by the longitude of
Moon at the time of birth.
This is unique to Vedic astrology and we call it Dasha
Vichar or Period Analysis
From December 13,1964 to June 25,1968 : main period of Saturn
This was a very good period for you but since the planet comes into its own
when the person becomes mature the benefic results can not be too meaningful
for the person. Instead the family may get the benefits of increased wealth
and improved creature comforts.
June 25,1968 to June 26, 1985: main period of Mercury
This was a mixed a period indicating success in education
and travel in the Easterly direction. In the first two years birth of a sister
is indicated.
This was followed by one year which was inauspicious
- health problems, accidents while travelling and a general sense of anxiety
mark this period lasting upto November 1971. The next three years saw your bloom
into a very attractive little girl, the apple of everyones' eyes. In the next
10 months sudden attacks of headache and/or fever might have bothered you. This
was followed by a happy time travelling with your family and receiving presents
from relatives living abroad.
The pubertal phase might have come a little early in
your case around the age of 12. This was followed by a confusing time upto the
14th birthday. Healthwise it was not very good but you started becoming the
centre of attraction whenever you went.
From July 1980 to September 1982 you should have made
a mark academically and became a talked about person is school. The phase continued
upto June 26,1985 with the difference that while upto September 1982 you were
carefree and happy, from October 82 you might have become more introspective,
focussed and feeling lonely even when surrounded by friends.
June 26,1985 to June 25,1992: main
period of Ketu
First two months
of this period were unsettling. But this was a passing phase. Towards the end
of 1986 there was a possibility of finding your life partner. The next few years
were exhilarating till trouble raised its head from the middle of 1991.
June 25, 1992 to June 25, 2012 : main period of Sun
For 3 years and four months you should have enjoyed a
very happy and prosperous time moving into a new house and buying a new car.
There was possibility of childbirth, great enjoyment and travel towards the
West.
This period was followed by a year of turmoil particularly
worsened by exchange of sharp words with near and dear ones.
Then starts a period of mental agony with separation
from loved ones, loss of wealth and lack of peace. Loss of dear ones is also
indicated. This phase ends on August 26,1999 but the depressed feelings may
continue till June 2000.
After that there will be a significant upswing in life.
There will be happy tidings and many friends. But some evil tongues may wag
a bit and you should ignore them.
From September 2002, you shall go through a very fortunate
period. Your actions will be appreciated and rewarded. You shall be in the company
of learned people and your position in society will be enhanced. This will continue
right upto June 2008. Then for four years it will again be mixed. From June
2008 to May 2010 you should guard against depression by focussing your energies
for the upliftment of the underprivileged.
June 25,2012 to June 26,2018: main period of Sun
These six years are relatively less fortunate. There
is a possibility of losing a senior member of the family (father?) Physically
it will be a trying time. You will feel feverish and depressed.
June 26,2018 to June 25,2028 : main period of Moon
You will be recovering from your bad phase during these
ten years. But your expenses will mount and again there may be a loss of dear
one (mother?). But there will be a general improvement in your inner peace.
The first ten months of this period will be excellent. You will enjoy sound
health, listen to good music and enjoy the company of sophisticated people.
Some assets considered lost will be acquired back. The next seven months are
inauspicious with quarrels, loss of money and disputes with loves ones. This
will be followed by nearly three years of increased income and property, all
round improvement in creature comforts. After that except a year and a half
from October 2022 to March 2024 you shall enjoy a good time.
June 25,2028 to June 26,2035: main
period of Mars
This will also be
a good period. But it will be characterised by many confrontations in which
you will be able to win over your adversaries. Your wealth will increase and
health will be generally good except a tendency towards piles. During this period
you will also travel a lot.
June 26,2035 to June 2053 : main period of Rahu
This is a mixed period and possibly the last period of your life. It indicates
mental anxiety. Death of a near one and some unexpected losses. But there will
be stable periods when health will improve. There will be no enemies and people
in power will help you. During this period, particularly from March 2038 to
July 2040 there will be marriage in the family and birth of children. These
will keep you in a happy frame of mind. The six years will be very busy but
you will be bothered by rheumatic pain and disease of the rectum. But overall
the period will be good for you.

Search for Our Life Script. The Answer to Peace, Prosperity
and Happiness in this Life
"Who am I? "
Our whole life is but a quest to find the answers to
the above question. We at Rediff.com do not claim that we know the answer.
All philosophers say, " know thyself ", but it is easier said than done. Only
God knows the answer because that is the final "knowledge". However astrologically,
by knowing the nature of planets, their strength and weaknesses in the horoscope,
one can gain a little insight into one's life. Let us attempt to do these together
for your life. According to Vedic Astrology, the four legitimate aims and goals
of human life are Kama, Artha, Dharma and Moksha.
Dharma means "principle of law and order" and refers
to the fulfillment of our need for honor or recognition in life. We call it
" Vocation" as this is how our culture interprets this need. Each of us needs
to be acknowledged for what we can contribute to society without compromising
our identity.
Kama literally means "desire" and refers to our need
for emotional and sensory happiness in life. As such we could call it "enjoyment".
All that we do in life should be enjoyable and not cause pain to ourselves or
others.
Artha means "achievement'' of goals. More specifically
it relates to the acquisition of valuable objects and so could be referred as
"wealth". Each of us should possess necessary wealth to function happily in
life.
Moksha means " liberation or freedom" and relates to
our need for spiritual growth, including transcendence of three lower values.
We all must seek to go beyond who we are until we become one with all.
The interesting thing is that each one of us work according
to the divine "Life Script", which determines to what extent and when we will
pursue each of these aims in our life. Of course, we do pursue all these aims
simultaneously all through our life. But, each one of us has a specific life
script, which we can get an indication of by analyzing each person's Vedic Astrology
charts. The important thing is to discover the Life script within ourselves.
The planets do act as referees and critics in this cosmic drama. They announce
prizes, penalties and sometimes also put a break. Through astrology what we
shall do is to get a better understanding of the rules of the game of our individual
life.
The first step:
Ordained Life Script
What is the mix of your script vis-à-vis the four
goals of human life?
From Ashtakavarga (8-fold interplanetary relationship
in our horoscopes) calculations, we find your scores are as follows: -
The average scores for these pursuits are 84. Anything
less than 84 or more than 84 will indicate you have a particular bias in the
pursuit of that goal less or more than the others, because the sum total of
these scores for any chart will always be 337.
Your ordained life script score as computed from your
birth chart indicates:
You will pursue " wealth" most in this life and your
score is 97 which is much higher than the average score of 84.
Next you will pursue " sensual pleasure and vocation
and your score is 86 for both which is also higher than average.
You will pursue "salvation" the least because your score
is only 68 which is very much less than average.
Our ordained life script scores are the karmik debts
that we carry forward from our previous birth and we have to fulfil the minimum
quota of each pursuit in life whether we like it or not. In case there are deviations,
planetary corrections are applied and events (both good and some bad) are triggered
off which force us to introspect so that we are back on our ordained life script
track.
Rahu (Moon's North Node) and Ketu (Moon's South Node)
are the two karmik planets through which events are triggered and their results
are distributed in our life.
From December 1998 when Rahu entered Cancer aspecting
your moon you may suffer from depression. Sometime it starts giving effect three
months before the movement. During this period many people get occult experiences.
In your horoscope there is a tendency of mood swings and you should be guard
against it. You should not indulge in alcohol or similar things, which can affect
the mood. In your case Rahu is afflicting both the luminaries and will continue
to do so till August 2000. Till such time you should not be influenced by so
called friends and get involved in activities, which can only lead to further
depression.
You should not however suffer from any pessimism about
your future. You are a kind and caring person with a strong horoscope you will
come through all adversities and lead a full life.
"Dukheshu anudvignamanah
Sukhesu vigataspriha
Vitraga bhayakrodha
Sa muni prochyote budhai"
This is my prayer for you. Stay calm when you face suffering.
Do not be overjoyed when you go through a happy phase. Control your anger, fear
and desire. This is the characteristic of a person whom people call wise.
May God grant you peace and happiness.
